Inspiring Women

Creating a legacy

06 Mar 2020

In advance of International Women's Day on 8 March 2020, Gill Tait reflects on a woman who inspired her.

Reflecting on women who have inspired me in life and throughout my career, I immediately thought of an old colleague of mine, Irene Johnstone.

I joined Hymans Robertson 24 years ago in a job share arrangement with Irene. Although only in her 50s, her health was suffering badly and she was having to scale back her hours. We instantly hit it off. Not only was Irene the embodiment of stoic determination as she combatted illness, she was a powerful champion for establishing the firm as an exemplar employer and a business that treated its clients and suppliers in a way that was wholly aligned with our values. She had a simple philosophy, treat others as you would want to be treated…. and always pay your bills on time. She was relentless in holding us to account on that. She cared deeply about everyone that worked in the firm and in a holistic way, knowing that life outside of work could impact life in the office so it was important to consider and look after the whole person. Many people benefitted from her generosity and selflessness and I was one of them.

She had a simple philosophy, treat others as you would want to be treated…. and always pay your bills on time.

Sadly Irene isn’t with us today to see how the firm has thrived on the foundations she helped set, but I hope she would have been just a little proud to know that her legacy endures and that we are all still benefitting from her early foresight.

Celebrating Inspiring Women

To celebrate International Women's Day we've a few events lined up. On 11 March we're hosting an informal 'Women in Investment' event in our London office. This gives students a chance to find out more about a career in investment. You can find out more here.

On 24 March we're delighted to welcome Dress for Success - a charity that supports women through job interviews, professional attire and training - to our London office to share the great work they do.

And continuing the theme of inspiring women we're hosting a quiz in all our offices, celebrating women who have inspired us, with the money raised being donated to Dress for Success and Smart Works.
