Scheme Advisory Board (SAB):

Good Governance in the LGPS

27 Feb 2019 - Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

We are delighted to have been appointed by the SAB to carry out this important piece of work which will consider options for enhancing LGPS governance arrangements to ensure that the Scheme is ready for the challenges ahead and at the same time retains local democratic accountability.

Our role is to facilitate an investigation of the issues and work with key stakeholders to develop options for change which will improve LGPS governance. We aim to consult widely and capture as many views as possible from those of you working within the LGPS. This will include carrying out a number of related activities including issuing surveys, arranging interviews, organising seminars and discussing at various LGPS events including the PLSA conference in May.

As a first stage, before any options for change are finalised by SAB, we will carry out a shorter survey to identify some of the real world problems which governance changes should aim to address. This will also help inform the options SAB consults widely on in the second stage between April and June. The timetable means that this preliminary stage will be short and we won’t be able to get input from everyone but if you are keen to provide input, please get in touch.

SAB plans to sign off a range of options for change at its April meeting. This will allow a full consultation on the agreed option to take place before the SAB receive the final report for consideration in July.

This work will be carried out by the following experienced team:

John Wright, Partner, Head of Public Sector

Catherine McFadyen, Partner, Head of Public Sector Actuarial, Benefits and Governance

Ian Colvin, Head of LGPS Benefits and Governance

If you would like to discuss any of this, we would be pleased to hear from you
