Sitting the first Actuarial Exams
26 Jun 2019 - Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
After joining Hymans Robertson in September as a graduate in the Actuarial and Benefits practice, I have recently taken my first set of actuarial exams. At first, the whole study and working balance may seem quite daunting but once you get used to it it’s not so bad!
When I first joined, I had the opportunity to discuss which exams to take and get advice about which exams go well together from my Study Mentor. Every office has a study mentor who is there to discuss any exam concerns or queries you may have.
One of the most important things to do, in order to manage studying while working is to be disciplined with yourself and try to create and stick to a study plan. This is really helpful to make sure you stay on track with revision, as they are not the type of exams you can leave until the last minute! The first sitting of exams also gives you the opportunity to find the right revision style for you. The course notes and revision products are very extensive so it is important to find the right tools for your personal learning as you do not need to use every product.

By the time exam season came, I felt prepared and ready to tackle the exams (which I certainly didn’t think I would back in September!). I felt quite nervous for my first exam, but it was really just like the exams that I did at university. My advice would be to practice as many past papers as you can as they are a great way to prepare.
Overall, studying and working can be difficult at times and you need to be prepared to give up free time to do this, but it is most definitely worth it. Hymans are also very supportive when it comes to managing workloads around exam season to enable you to get revision in!
