Developing your potential
A People Manager's perspective
12 Oct 2018
I really enjoy my role as a People Manager at Hymans Robertson. It is very rewarding to help individuals develop and enhance their skills whilst also providing variety from client work as a trainee actuarial consultant.
At first, when new staff join the firm, the people management meetings are often led and organised by the people manager. My focus is to ensure they are enjoying their new job and getting the right level of training and support to develop. The role of people manager is key to help individuals settle into working life at Hymans.
My people management relationships gradually become driven by the individual themselves. As they progress in their roles, they become more aware of the opportunities around them, what their strengths are and their aims for the future. It’s then nice to see them taking more and more control of how they want to see their career develop, with help from me.
You become even more aware of how diverse everyone is – different motivations, drivers, skill sets and ideas about where they see their career growing amongst other things.
Natalie Edelsten - People Manager
In my role as a people manager, I have a responsibility to be understanding and encouraging to help develop the people I manage; Hymans provides support and training to all people managers to ensure we are equipped with the knowledge and understanding to carry out the role effectively. People manager forums are also held to allow us to learn and share our experiences with other people managers across different departments.
I have people managed actuarial students and actuarial analysts and enjoy the different challenges that come with the role. During the time as a people manager, you become even more aware of how diverse everyone is – different motivations, drivers, skill sets and ideas about where they see their career growing amongst other things. Everyone is unique and their career paths will evolve and adapt over time which means no people management discussions are ever the same! It is really great that Hymans encourages individuality and embraces diversity in the workplace: recognising that everyone is different and has their own strengths to bring to the Hymans table.
