Opportunities for Part Qualified Actuaries - Graham's story
21 Mar 2018 - Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
After starting at Hymans in 2010 I have progressed to being a qualified actuary and now a team leader in our private sector practice. The opportunities and wealth of support I’ve received from my colleagues throughout my time has helped me enormously in progressing through my career thus far. We provide many opportunities giving great learning and development opportunities for people as they approach qualification and thereafter, whilst supporting through the exams.
Looking back 2-3 years I was aware I was approaching qualification and was keen to push on to the next level on the work that I was doing and was seeking new opportunities. I was encouraged to share my ambitions with my people manager, my team leader and those I worked with who were all able to lend support, guide me and identify opportunities. Through this support and encouragement I found myself in the position of being the key support to the Scheme Actuary on my clients with the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with my clients. I have also worked on new business opportunities and a number of internal projects which interested me. I now have the role of team leader, supporting my team on resourcing and ensuring the team has the support they need to take the next steps in their career.
In the practice we have a big client base (both in the DB and DC markets) and you will be assigned to clients with a view to supporting the Scheme Actuary in leading the client work internally and having the opportunity to meet and consult with our clients. This can give you a great platform of knowledge and experience to build on as you work towards qualification.
As Hymans is a growing business there continue to be a lot of opportunities outside day to day client work including supporting on new business projects, involvement in buy-in and buy-out projects and being part of new propositions that we take to the pensions market, amongst other things. Due to size of the company (not too small, not too big), as a student approaching qualification you have the chance to really feel involved and that you can make a difference in these exciting new projects.
Whilst all these options and opportunities are exciting, we know taking the next step in your career can be daunting particularly as you approach qualification. We put a real focus on ensuring that everyone is supported both in understanding the options available to you and so you have guidance and a sounding board as you progress through your career. Everyone has a dedicated people manager whose job is to support you, help set objectives and help you in achieving your goals. In addition you will be supported by your team leader and our senior team.
To discuss your next step as a part qualifed actuary with Hymans Robertson please contact the Recruitment Team based in our Glasgow office on 0141 566 7777 or visit www.hymans.co.uk/careers to apply.
